Curriculum

Royston St John Baptist C of E Primary School encompasses three Key Stages: Foundation Stage (FS2/Reception class), KS1 (Years 1 and 2), KS2 (Years 3, 4, 5 and 6).


Foundation Stage
The Foundation Stage children follow the Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage. The Curriculum is divided into seven areas of learning:
 Communication and Language
 Physical Development
 Personal, Social and Emotional Development
 Literacy
 Mathematics
 Understanding of the World
 Expressive Arts and Design


Key Stages 1 and 2
The curriculum includes the study of English, Mathematics, Science, Art & Design, Computing, Design & Technology, Geography, History, Languages, Music, Physical Education and Religious Education.


All subject areas follow the National Curriculum and are taught in mixed ability classes. We use a cross-curricular approach in our lessons to give a context to the children’s learning. Where this is not appropriate subjects are taught discretely. A range of teaching methods are used to enable all children to reach their full potential. This includes personalised learning strategies which might take the form of whole class, group, paired and individual teaching to meet the needs of all children, including those with Special Educational Needs.
The progress of children in Y2 and Y6 will be measured using the DfE Standard Assessment Tests and Teacher Assessments in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science. Teacher Assessment, supported by tests, where appropriate, is used to track the progress of pupils throughout school.


English is one of the core curriculum subjects. The overarching aim for English in the National Curriculum is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.
Throughout the school we encourage all pupils to speak clearly, fluently and confidently and to listen attentively with understanding. We aim to provide a `print rich' atmosphere in school where all children are encouraged to develop fluency and expression which will enable them to read for enjoyment and information. We use a variety of reading books enabling us to provide a more individualised reading programme to cater for each child's needs. We encourage pupils to write effectively for a range of audiences and purposes using spelling, punctuation and syntax accurately and confidently.
Aspects of English are covered through all areas of the school curriculum and where appropriate, educational visits are used to enhance the child's interest in and understanding of English.


Mathematics is one of the core curriculum subjects and the National Curriculum for mathematics (from
2014) aims to ensure that all pupils:
 become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice
with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and
the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
 can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems
with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and
persevering in seeking solutions.

We use the Singapore method of teaching maths via Maths No Problem! The programme uses a collaborative, child-centred approach, which equips all pupils with the fluency, thinking skills and resilience to apply their knowledge to different mathematical problems

 


Science is one of the core curriculum subjects and the National Curriculum for science aims to ensure that all
pupils:
 develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of
biology, chemistry and physics
 develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of
science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
 are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of
science, today and for the future.


Art & Design - The National Curriculum for art & design aims to ensure that all pupils:
 produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
 become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
 evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
 know about great artists, craft makers and designers and understand the historical and cultural
development of their art forms.


Computing. Children will be taught fundamental principles and concepts of computer science. They will
learn how to analyse problems in computational terms; how to evaluate and apply information technology;
and to be responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication
technology.


Design & Technology. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real
and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and
values. This will include designing and making prototypes and learning about the principles of nutrition and
how to cook.


Geography. Through the teaching of geography we aim to inspire in our pupils a curiosity and fascination
about the world and its people.


History. We aim to help the children gain a knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the
wider world. In Foundation Stage, children explore past events in their own lives.


Languages. In KS2 our children learn French (taught by a specialist French teacher) , gaining an understanding of the language and culture in France.


Music. Pupils will be encouraged to develop an understanding and enjoyment of music through activities involving performing, composing, listening and appraising. Throughout their school life pupils will explore a variety of pitched and unpitched instruments and experience music from different times and cultures including classical, folk and popular music.
For many years our school has had a strong musical tradition. Currently, groups of pupils receive guitar, violin, cello and samba tuition from the LA peripatetic staff.
In addition we have a School choir. Concerts are held periodically when the children perform both individually and in groups, supported by singing and percussion. When possible the instrumentalists take part in our worship both in school and in Church.


PE. In PE pupils are encouraged to develop competence in a broad range of physical activities; to be physically active for sustained periods of time including movement (eg gymnastics, athletics, dance and games); to engage in competitive sports and activities (including sports day); and to lead healthy active lives.


Religious Education and Collective Worship. Each day there is an act of Collective Worship in which all children take part with the staff, as well as from time to time joining in worship in the Parish Church. These acts of Collective Worship are always in accordance with the faith and practice of the Church of England.
Similarly, Religious Education in School is in accordance with the teaching of the Church of England as shown in the Trust Deeds of this School. Religious Education within our school seeks to enable pupils to know about and understand Christianity as a living world faith.

We aim to:
 develop a knowledge and understanding of Christianity as a Major World Faith
 develop a positive attitude towards other people and their right to hold beliefs different from their own
 develop a knowledge and some understanding of other World Religions represented in Great Britain.
First hand experience enhances children’s learning and school visits to places of worship of major world faiths are arranged, to enable our pupils to develop their knowledge and understanding by observation and discussion.
