Phonics

We teach phonics every day in FS2 and KS1. We use the Letters and Sounds programme to teach children the letters of the alphabet and their matching sounds.

Children are taught to read words by blending, which means pushing the sounds together, to make a word.

Children are taught to spell words by segmenting, which means sounding out words, and writing down the sounds they can hear.

We also use Big Cat phonics and other reading materials to support our children as they learn to read and write.

Phonics Screening Check

At the end of Y1 all children nationally take the Phonics Screening Check. If a child does not meet the required standard in Y1 they must resit the check at the end of Y2.

The Phonics Screening Check presents 40 real and nonsense words for the children to read. The nonsense words are called alien words. The children practise reading such words in their phonics sessions.

If you have any questions or would like any further support, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
